The Burgwin-Wright House is pleased to welcome Charles Brett for a special presentation on Colonial Medicine.

Brett will explore the different medical occupations found in Colonial America, the common medical issues and diseases of the time, how medical practitioners were trained and treated patients, and what kind of remedies could be used in the 17th and 18th century.

Admission is free, a $10 donation to Burgwin-Wright is suggested. All money raised will go toward the preservation of the 1770 house and 1774 jail structures.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Charles Brett is originally from Portsmouth, Virginia and raised in the surrounding cities of the Tidewater area of Virginia. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 2013 after serving for 24 years as a Hospital Corpsman. He served in multiple medical positions roles at various locations around the country and aboard three U.S. Navy ships, eventually becoming a professor and program director for the Naval School of Health Sciences where he taught history in both military medicine and pharmacy.

Today, he is a Financial Analyst at the Naval Medical Center in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, but his biggest and most-time-consuming hobby is working with 17th and 18th century medicine. He's trained with medical interpreters at the Pasteur and Galt Apothecary shop in Colonial Williamsburg, and currently volunteers at Tryon Palace as a guide in the Kitchen Office and interpreting 18th century medicine as a Physician, Surgeon and Apothecary. He is also a member of the Society for the History of Navy Medicine and founding member of a non-profit organization called “The Pursuit of History.”
