WILMINGTON -- “Water and Light”, a show of oil and watercolor paintings by Virginia Wright-Frierson, will open at the Burgwin-Wright House on Friday, Jan. 26. The reception from 6 to 9 p.m. is part of downtown Wilmington’s Fourth Friday Gallery Nights.

A versatile and prolific artist, Wright-Frierson describes herself on her website as a painter, sculptor, muralist, illustrator and author. Print-maker should be added to this list, but none of these titles accurately describes the uniquely creative endeavor that produced The Bottle Chapel at Airlie Gardens.

Wright-Frierson is also renowned for the mural she was commissioned to paint on the atrium ceiling at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. In the wake of the school’s tragic mass shooting in 1999, the mural offers a symbol of hope, depicting evergreens and aspens reaching for the sunlight.

Additionally, Wright-Frierson has illustrated several children’s books, many of which will be available for purchase at the Burgwin-Wright House, along with block prints and note cards by the artist. Wright-Frierson’s show closes on Feb. 17.

Built in 1770, the Burgwin-Wright House is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Guided tours of the colonial-era mansion are offered on the hour from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Owned and operated by The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the State of North Carolina, the museum house also serves as the nonprofit organization’s headquarters.
